2006 10th Anniversary Two Dollar Gold Coin

In February the Royal Canadian Mint launched the new 10th Anniversary two dollar gold coin. This was the new two dollar coin to replace the two dollar bank note. This bi metallic coin is composed of a 22 carat gold outer ring with a 4.1 carat gold core.

This is the anniversary of the unique bimetallic construction of a nickel outer ring with an aluminum bronze core with the design of a polar bear standing on the edge of an open section of the Arctic sea ice.

The polar bear has ruled the Arctic for millennia. In doing so, it has captured the imagination of people around the world. Canadian wildlife artist Brent Townsend had perfectly captured the bear’s distinctive profile; a somewhat hunched posture that hints at its lowly gait. But don’t be fooled by the polar bear’s sluggish pace - it’s a deliberate heat-preserving measure that is in stark contrast to the intelligent and quick-witted mind that’s inside!

America's First Gold Coin Returns to Baltimore for $6 Million "Homecoming"
Insured for $6 million, the fabled Brasher Doubloon -- the United States' first gold coin -- returns to Baltimore for the first time in a quarter century for a public display, March 17 & 18, 2006.

The coin was first struck in 1787 by Silversmith Ephraim Brasher and is considered one of the most important coins in American history

"The denomination, 'doubloon,' may seem unusual today, but it was the coin-of-the-realm when the Brasher Doubloon was issued in 1787 as proposed coinage for the new republic. At the time, doubloons contained $14 worth of gold, but the Brasher Doubloons actually had $15 worth of gold when they were made," explained John W. Dannreuther, a co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Newport Beach, California, the world's largest rare coin authentication company. "This is America's first $15 denomination coin."

"The coin was hand-struck in 1787 by George Washington's New York City neighbor, silversmith Ephraim Brasher," said Edward Kuszmar an official of the collector’s show. "It's one of the most important coins in American history."

The coin went through a number of auctions and sales after being kept in a vault for many years and in 1981 it was sold for 625,000 dollars

"Being the first gold coin struck for the United States makes it a national treasure with tremendous significance for American history. It underscores the beginnings of our economic system," said Contursi, the coin's current owner.

"Only seven Brasher Doubloons survive today, and the one coming back to Baltimore is unique. It is the only one with the designer’s initials, 'EB,' punched across the breast of an eagle depicted on the coin. The other surviving examples have the initials on the

US Liberty 5 dollar gold coins

USAgold have announced the acquisition of some US Liberty 5 dollar gold coins

Per their announcement, “Each coin contains just under one-quarter ounce of gold, with an actual gold content weighing in at 0.2419 oz. In weight and size, these coins compare closely with the always-popular European and South American issues that frequent our monthly Buyers' Groups."

General availability is another story, however. Under normal circumstances, if someone wanted to secure a large number of British sovereigns, Dutch guilders, or Swiss 20 francs, their order could be filled with ease. A reasonably large order of US $5 Liberties is a different story. Such an order could take months to fill. But now, because of this recent acquisition of 950 coins, USAGold can offer this item in quantities that would have been impossible to offer in the past.”

These coins are in extra fine condition and they are being offered at a price range per coin from 198 to 182 dollars depending on the quantity of coins purchased.

“Referred to as the Liberty Half Eagle, the US $5 gold piece holds the distinction of being the only coin of any denomination or strike to be minted at all seven of the national US Mints. Minted from 1866 to 1908, the $5 Liberty depicts the crowned image of Lady Liberty on the obverse, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies. On the reverse is the traditional bald eagle image, with a shield on its breast, clasping three arrows in its left talon (sinister) and an olive branch in its right (dexter), symbolizing the power of Congress to bring both war and peace, respectively. The eagle's head is turned to the right, signaling its preference for peace. On an interesting side note, the seal for the President of the United States was virtually the same, except the eagle faced the talon holding the arrows. In 1945, Harry S Truman changed it so that the seals were the same. Christian Gobrecht, most famous for the "seated liberty" design seen on dimes, quarters, and half dollars during this era, designed the Liberty series presented here.”
