2006 10th Anniversary Two Dollar Gold Coin

In February the Royal Canadian Mint launched the new 10th Anniversary two dollar gold coin. This was the new two dollar coin to replace the two dollar bank note. This bi metallic coin is composed of a 22 carat gold outer ring with a 4.1 carat gold core.

This is the anniversary of the unique bimetallic construction of a nickel outer ring with an aluminum bronze core with the design of a polar bear standing on the edge of an open section of the Arctic sea ice.

The polar bear has ruled the Arctic for millennia. In doing so, it has captured the imagination of people around the world. Canadian wildlife artist Brent Townsend had perfectly captured the bear’s distinctive profile; a somewhat hunched posture that hints at its lowly gait. But don’t be fooled by the polar bear’s sluggish pace - it’s a deliberate heat-preserving measure that is in stark contrast to the intelligent and quick-witted mind that’s inside!
