2006 Gold Coin Torch Relay

The new 2006 Gold Coin Torch Relay is available from the Royal Canadian Mint.

This is a beautiful pure .9 percent gold coin with a weight of 16.129 grams and a face value of 50 euros.

This coin has a limited mintage of 6,000 coins so is expected to increase in value over the coming years quite nicely.

The obverse depicts the Torch Relay of the Olympics. The most visible symbol of the modern Olympics dates back to ancient Greece. Ignited by the sun in ancient Olympia, the sacred flame would pass from runner to runner as the torch traveled across the land to the host city.
Centuries later, the flame still symbolizes the burning desire for perfection and victory, friendship and peace - the anticipation of the Games begins to build the moment the torch is lit!

This coin is only available from the mint in Canada but one can expect to eventually acquire it from coin dealers around the traps in the not too distant future.

The coin is currently 879.95 dollars Canadian plus shipping.

2006 Gold Bullion Half Sovereign

The British Royal Mint has the 2006 Gold Bullion Half Sovereign still available even though there was a limited issue of only 75,000 minted.

This is a traditional sovereign design coin with the reverse displaying that most celebrated of Sovereign designs – the image of St George slaying the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci. The obverse carries the greatly-renowned portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.

This is an exceptionally well designed and popular coin. Being only half a full sovereign and much less than an ounce makes it a more affordable buy than the full one ounce gold coins, especially at today’s gold prices.

Nevertheless it is still a collectors item and makes an ideal savings or investment gold coin

Each Sovereign is struck in the finest quality 22 carat gold and eloquently captures every detail of the design. The polished coin is housed within a beautifully illustrated presentation card.

Specifications:
Alloy 22 Carat Gold
Weight 3.99 grams
Diameter 19.3 mm
Denomination HALF SOV
Obverse Designer Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS
Cost is about 52 British pounds (around 90 USD)

If you are looking for the smaller gold coin that is more economically affordable yet still able to be accumulated and saved for that rainy day then you will not be able to go past the 2006 Gold Bullion Half Sovereign.

2006 American Eagle Gold Proof

The 2006 American Eagle Gold Proof set is available still from the US Mint

"The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens' full-length figure of Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. The reverse design, by sculptor Miley Busiek, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings."

"The 2006 American Eagle Four Coin Gold Proof Set is packaged in a blue velvet, satin-lined presentation case and accompanied by a custom-designed Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Acting Director of the United States Mint."

The mintage is restricted to only 27,000 sets so this is likely to sell out fairly quickly.

Austria 2006 Mozart Gold Coin

The Year 2006 is the 250th anniversary of one of the world's greatest composers, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and this is celebrated by the Austria 2006 Mozart gold
Coin. Issued by the Austrian Mint.

On the reverse of the gold coin there are two portraits. One of Mozart himself and another of his Father, Leopold. Around the perimeter of the coin are their names also along with the years of Amadeus' life, 1756 to 1796.

As early as 1762, when Wolfgang was only six, he performed before the Empress Maria Theresa in the Palace of Schoenbrunn in Vienna - the famous occasion when the Empress reputedly took Mozart on her lap and gave him a motherly kiss!

The life of this genius was cut short at just 35 years when he died on 5th December 1791. Who knows what he would have produced had he lived longer. However he did leave the world a vast legacy of its greatest music, including operas, symphonies, concertos and dances. It is safe to say that Mozart is not only one of the most famous Austrians, but also one of the best-known musical geniuses in the world.

On the obverse, is a picture of the house where Mozart was born, in Salzburg's Getreidegasse. Also shown is the face value 50 euros, the year of issue 2006, and the country of issue, Republik Oesterreich (Republic of Austria.)

The coin is pure 0.9860 gold with a weight of ten grams. This is a proof coin with a mintage of 50,000 only. The diameter is 22.00mm and the face value is 50 euros.

The Austrian mint are selling this coin for $289 USD.

This is an especially attractive coin commemorating a veritable genius in music. To own the Austria 2006 Mozart gold coin would be a memorable please in any collectors coin portfolio.

Latest Dutch Gold Coins

The Royal Dutch Mint has produced some very attractive Dutch gold coins. The first of these is called the Aruba Jubilee-coin 10 Florin Gold 2005.

This is a commemorative coin on the occasion of the 25 year reigning jubilee of Queen Beatrix. It was available from the end of August 2005 but you can still buy this very nice coin from the Royal Dutch mint.

Only 1500 have been minted and currently there are (at the time of writing) still five in stock.

They are .900 percent purse fine gold and weight in at 6.72 grams. This is a proof coin with a face value of 10 florins (approx $5.4USD).

The attractive design is by Frank L Croes

It is on sale for 139.95 Euros.

There is also the Netherlands Antilles Jubilee-Coin 10 Guilders Gold 2005. This also is a commemorative coin on the occasion of the 25 year reigning jublilee of Queen Beatrix.

This coin is essentially the same except the face value is ten guilders (the same as 10 florins in value) and the design, in this case, is by Tirzo Martha.

Again there was only 1,500 minted and there is (at the time of writing) only 5 in stock.

The Dutch Royal Mint also has some gold coins planned for 2006 including, curiously enough, a 10 euro ‘Australia” gold coin. We will be watching for this one.

In the meantime, both these latest Dutch gold coins would make an attractive addition to any coin enthusiasts collection.

Latest Swiss Gold Coin

The latest Swiss gold coin celebrates 500 years of the Pontifical Swiss Guard.

The 22nd January 1506, was the day the Pontifical Swiss Guard was considered established. On this day 150 Swiss guards were put on duty on the Piazza San Pietro by Pope Julius II to guard the entrance to the Vatican in Rone.

That day the foundations were laid for a regular and permanent body of Swiss guards who, even to this day, constantly monitor the entrance points to the Vatican City in Rome. Currently the Papal Guard consists of 110 men of Swiss nationality.

During the plundering of Rome on 6th may 1527, many guards were killed and since then 6th May has been a special day each year, on which the new guards are sworn in.

The commemorative coin, '500 years of the Pontifical Swiss Guard' was issued on the 20th January 2006. The Artist for the coin was Rudolf Mirer, Obersaxen. The coin image is that of a Swiss Guard. Legal face value is 50 Swiss francs. It is .900 pure gold and weighs 11.29grams. It is a proof coin and only 6000 were minted.

It is currently unavailable from the Swiss Mint but some keen searching may fine one at a reputable coin dealers or on eBay.

This is a very nice coin and this latest Swiss gold coin would make an excellent addition to any gold coin collection.

Japanese Gold and Silver Coins

Japanese gold and silver coin sets are available from dealers who deal in Japanese coins.

A good example is the EXPO 2005 AICHI JAPAN 10,000 Yen Gold Proof Commemorative Coin and the 1,000 Yen Silver Proof Commemorative Coin.

These were struck to commemorate the AICHI Expo in from March through to Sept 2005
With "Nature's wisdom" as its theme, more than 120 nations, international organizations, plus numerous corporate groups and NGO/NPOs are participating in the first international expo of the 21st century in order to reach solutions to global problems, such as global warming and energy issues. During the event, around 15 million people are expected to visit it.

To Celebrate this event, Japan Mint produced three kinds of commemorative coins; 10,000 yen gold and 1,000 yen silver proof coins, and 500 yen nickel-brass coins for regular circulation in Japan.

The 10,000 yen pure gold coin weighs 15.6g (1/2oz) and has a diameter of 26mm. Total mintage of the coin is limited to 70,000.

The obverse of the gold coin features the globe, surrounded by the sun, the moon, stars, clouds, rain, lightning and water flow. A family of owls, regarded as the Aichi prefecture's bird, appears against the earth. The design symbolizes the marvelous mechanism of nature and the power of life.

The 1,000 yen pure silver coin weighs 31.1g (1oz) and has a diameter of 40mm. Total mintage of the coin is limited to 70,000.

The obverse of the silver coin features the blue planet, surrounded by young trees. With the sophisticated pad-printing technology, a satellite photograph is well copied in three colors: blue, white and gray. The design symbolizes the peaceful unification of human beings and the love for the nature.

The gold coin and the silver coin have a common reverse design. The symbol of the EXPO is placed on the upper half of the coins. Below that, five horizontal lines depicting the ground symbolize the Aichi Expo and the four other world expositions that have been held in Japan. Two latent images, "NIPPON" (meaning "Japan") and "10000" or "1000" (the face value of the coin) are alternately visible between two of the lines.

These coins are available as a solo proof gold coin (35,000 units): a solo proof silver coin (35,000 units): and a set of a proof gold coin and a proof silver coin (35,000 units). And up to five percent, equal to 1,750 each, are allocated for overseas market.

These Japanese gold and silver coin sets would make a fine, if unusual, addition to a coin enthusiasts collection.

New Zealand Mint Bullion

New Zealand Mint bullion is not as well known as the major mints of the world but it produces some of the finest gold and silver coins as well as the substantial gold and silver bars.

The Gold Kiwi Series of coins are pure .9999 gold and the same for the gold bars. Silver coins and bars are also .999 pure silver. All gold coins minted by New Zealand Mint, in fact, are certified to be .9999 pure. New Zealand Mint only uses gold that has been refined to the highest international standard of .9999 pure.

New Zealand gold is sourced from all major mines throughout New Zealand. The country's primary gold production areas include the South Island's Otago, the West Coast and the North Island's Coromandel region.

The coins come in one ounce, half ounce and quarter ounce coins. The gold bars come in five, and ten troy ounce and one kilo ounce bars. The silver in one and five kilo bars.

The coins are remarkably beautiful and very well presented.

The New Zealand Mint also produces theme coins, such as the Lord of the Rings series and the conquest of Everest. Both themes close the heart in New Zealand. These coins are beautifully made and sell very well.

The theme coins are produced as limited series sets so once the coins are sold there is no more. Some have already been sold out so your only way of getting them would be from a dealer to whom a buyer has sold perhaps.

But there are still some available of some sets. The gold theme sets are generally of 22 carat gold rather than 24 carat to increase the hardness and durability of the coins.

Further information can be had from New Zealand Mint bullion and buying and owning New Zealand Mint bullion would be a pleasurable activity for any coin enthusiast.

2006 Gold Coin from the US Mint

There is a new gold coin emerging from the US Mint sometime in 2006

Last Tuesday Washington officials announced a new 99.99 percent fine 24 karat gold coin will be struck at the US Mint.

Although most coins struck are for circulation, this one will not and is intended purely for collectors and investors.

"The United States Mint intends to match and exceed world class business practices with this new 24-karat gold bullion coin," said Henrietta Holsman Fore, director of the U.S. Mint, in a statement.

"There is a demand, both here and abroad, for 24-karat gold coins," she said. "We want to meet this demand by providing the highest quality and most beautiful coins in the world."

There is a 2.4 billion dollars market for 24 karat gold coins according to the US Mint. Nearly sixty percent of high grade gold coins sold last year were 24 karat gold coins with the Canadian Gold maple Leaf being the most popular.

The 24 karat grade coin will surpass the current issues of 22 karat grading and will compete directly with the South African Krugerrand.

"The program will have two phases," the Mint's statement noted, "starting with an investor-grade uncirculated 24-karat gold bullion coin, followed by a 24-karat numismatic collector proof coin."

The mint also claims that the American Gold Eagle accounts for 95 percent of all gold coin sales in the US. However on the international market the 24 karat gold coin is much more popular and the US government found itself unable to compete with that.

The designs for the new coin have yet to be announced but are expected in the Spring.

The coins will have a nominal face value but, like all solid gold coins, will sell for the value of the gold at least

The new 2006 gold coin from the US Mint will be a coin to watch for and snap up directly it is issued. More to come!

2006 $300 Dollar Canadian Gold Coin

The Canadian Royal Mint has struck a new 2006 $300 Gold Coin called the 1900 “Shinplaster”.

The Canadian Royal Mint states about the coin:

“Rediscover Britannia as she appeared on Canada’s second “shinplaster” of 1900, the 25-cent fractional note that was originally introduced in 1870 as a temporary issue while the Dominion waited for new silver coins to arrive from the Royal Mint in London."

"It wasn’t long before people began calling it a “shinplaster” after the notes that American soldiers reputedly used to line their boots during the American Revolution. Fearing this reputation might negatively affect public acceptance, “Will pay on demand” and “Redeemable on presentation at Montreal, Toronto or St. John” were printed on the back - a promise that made the note “as good as gold” and quickly instilled public confidence. In fact, this “temporary” issue was so popular that it remained in circulation for 65 years."

"By 1900, the note was due for a new design. And there was no question that it would have to maintain an image of Britannia. While the original note of 1870 featured her portrait, the new issue showed Britannia seated next to a shield with the Union Jack.”

"Make the patron goddess of early British Celtic tribes a fascinating part of your collection when you order the spectacular 2006 $300 Gold Coin struck in 14-karat gold. Only 1,250 of these spectacular coins are being minted.”

As well as this recent tower with Gråsten Palace Bell Tower, the series has included Nólsoy Lighthouse in the Faroe Islands, Landet Church on the island of Tåsinge, Svaneke Water Tower on Bornholm, the Goose Tower in Vordingborg, Christiansborg Palace Tower, the Old Copenhagen Stock Exchange (Børsen) and Aarhus City Hall Tower.
