Austria 2006 Mozart Gold Coin

The Year 2006 is the 250th anniversary of one of the world's greatest composers, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and this is celebrated by the Austria 2006 Mozart gold
Coin. Issued by the Austrian Mint.

On the reverse of the gold coin there are two portraits. One of Mozart himself and another of his Father, Leopold. Around the perimeter of the coin are their names also along with the years of Amadeus' life, 1756 to 1796.

As early as 1762, when Wolfgang was only six, he performed before the Empress Maria Theresa in the Palace of Schoenbrunn in Vienna - the famous occasion when the Empress reputedly took Mozart on her lap and gave him a motherly kiss!

The life of this genius was cut short at just 35 years when he died on 5th December 1791. Who knows what he would have produced had he lived longer. However he did leave the world a vast legacy of its greatest music, including operas, symphonies, concertos and dances. It is safe to say that Mozart is not only one of the most famous Austrians, but also one of the best-known musical geniuses in the world.

On the obverse, is a picture of the house where Mozart was born, in Salzburg's Getreidegasse. Also shown is the face value 50 euros, the year of issue 2006, and the country of issue, Republik Oesterreich (Republic of Austria.)

The coin is pure 0.9860 gold with a weight of ten grams. This is a proof coin with a mintage of 50,000 only. The diameter is 22.00mm and the face value is 50 euros.

The Austrian mint are selling this coin for $289 USD.
