2007 Britannia Gold Proof £10 1/10 Ounce

The new 2007 Britannia Gold Proof £10 Ounce coin contains one tenth of an ounce of fine gold and is one of the most beautiful and affordable of gold coins. Measuring a tiny 16.50 millimetres in diameter, just 1,500 individual issues have been authorized.

Britannia symbolized Great Britain and her proud island heritage since the time of Roman Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD) and first appeared on British currency in 1672, on the copper coins of Charles II. He used her as a political symbol of his war with the Dutch, though her olive branch represented a desire for peace above conflict.

Usually but not always depicted seated, Britannia gazes steadfastly towards a future in which she may be challenged but never overcome. Her accoutements include a trident, symbolic of her maritime prowess, and shield, emblazoned since Queen Victoria's reign with the Union Flag.

This coin is struck from 22 carat gold. The alloy contains a trace amount of silver, giving the distinctive yellow colour introduced in 1990 and has been polished using traditional tools and techniques. This high quality finish forms the perfect backdrop for Britannia, rendered expertly by Royal Mint engravers.

Each coin contains one tenth of an ounce of fine gold and bears the powerful new design by artist Christopher Le Brun, RA. who created a new image especially for this 2007 coin. He has remained faithful to the spirit of Britannia, incorporating her traditional symbols and leonine companion, yet with a contemporary air that rewards repeated viewings.

Beautifully presented and accompanied by an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity the coin carries on its obverse the familiar portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley, FRBS.

In his new design for 2007, Royal Academician Christopher Le Brun has masterfully blended a traditional theme with a line at once modern and full of classical allusions.
