2007 Abolition of the Slave Trade £2 Gold Proof

The British Royal Mint have just issued the 2007 Abolition of the Slave Trade £2 Gold Proof coin.

This is in commemoration of the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade. For this the Royal Mint has been granted permission to strike a limited-edition two-pound coin in 22 carat gold to impeccable Proof quality. The Abolition Bill of 1807 was a major turning point in British history and possibly one of the most significant advancements in human dignity in many hundreds of years. The persistent campaigning of a group of British activists, the courage and resistance of the slaves themselves along with the pressure and support from the public finally brought about the end of the inhumane business of the transatlantic slave trade.

Each two-pound coin features the simple yet powerful design by David Gentleman, RDI on its reverse. Gentleman chose to depict the imagery of chains with one link broken, representing a ‘release from subjection’ and, which also doubles as the anniversary date of 1807.

The traditional portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley, FRBS appears on the obverse framed by the contrasting outer ring. The edge inscription is taken from the anti-slavery seal by Josiah Wedgwood, which reads ‘AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER’.

Struck in 22 carat gold with a yellow gold inner and a contrasting red gold outer ring, the gold Proof commemorative two-pound coin is subject to a restricted mintage of just 1,000 to satisfy worldwide demand and is beautifully displayed in an elegant presentation case.
